How To Claim Medicaid / Medicare Benefits in North Carolina

Medical Benefits for the Disabled

When you come to Golson, McCracken Inc. for help claiming Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), we will take the time to carefully review your situation and determine whether you may be eligible to receive any additional types of benefits. In many cases, the people who hire our services for a North Carolina Social Security Disability claim will also end up applying to receive healthcare benefits as well. In this way, they not only receive payments to make it easier to cover their living expenses, but they also get medical coverage to pay for their care, treatment and medications they need to manage their health and to improve.

About the Medicaid Program in North Carolina

Medicaid is a means-tested program that provides healthcare benefits to people who are in need and cannot afford to pay for their medical expenses on their own. There are no age requirements for Medicaid, but your income and resources must fall below the allowable threshold. If you qualify to receive Supplemental Security Income, you should automatically be eligible for Medicaid coverage. As of 2010, more than 66 million people were receiving Medicaid benefits nationwide, and the program paid out more than $383 billion in benefits. Medicaid can cover a variety of different types of expenses including doctor visits and hospital bills, dental and vision care, prescription drugs, nursing home care and even your premiums for Medicare coverage.

Medicare Coverage for Social Security Disability Recipients

The Medicare program provides healthcare insurance for Americans age 65 or older, as well as for disabled people of all ages and those suffering from certain conditions, such as kidney failure and Lou Gehrig’s disease. It is a social insurance program for which you can qualify regardless of your medical history, and it is not a means-tested program, so you can be eligible even if you are not of limited resources and income. There are four sections to Medicare coverage, including:

  • Part A – Hospital insurance that covers your stay in a hospital, as well as inpatient treatment, hospice care, skilled nursing care and similar services
  • Part B – Pays for basic doctor visits, lab costs and certain types of outpatient medical services
  • Part C – Medicare Advantage, which is available for people who have Parts A and B and makes it possible to reduce costs by receiving services through a single provider organization
  • Part D – Prescription drug coverage that helps to minimize costs for expensive medications

Medicare Coverage Eligibility

Medicare coverage generally covers around half of the expenses for treatment and care, leaving the remaining costs to be paid for by the Medicare recipient. As of 2010, there were around 48 million people enrolled in Medicare throughout the United States. While the majority of Medicare enrollees are eligible based on their age, it is also possible to qualify by getting approved for Social Security Disability Insurance.
