Applying for Medicaid for the Adult Disabled

Many of our clients are not able to access medical attention because they are uninsured. Some have applied for Medicaid and been denied. Others may have been turned away before they even completed an application because the person at Social Services misinformed them that they cannot get Medicaid if the do not have minor children or have not been found disabled by Social Security. If you do not have excessive income or assets, do not have health insurance, and are unable to work because of health problems, you are likely eligible for Medicaid for the Adult Disabled.

These are the steps you should follow, and the things to remember, when applying for Medicaid for the Adult Disabled:

1. Call or visit your local Social Services office and tell them you want to apply for Medicaid for the Adult Disabled.

  1. Be assertive and tell them you demand your right to apply even if they tell you that you can’t apply because Social Security has not found you disabled. Be polite but firm, and let them know that you are appealing your denial of Social Security Disability with Social Security.
  • When you go for your appointment it is helpful to take your Social Security Card or number, and any information about possible resources likebank accounts or insurance policy numbers. Take a list of doctors, clinics and hospitals where you have had treatment.
  1. Ask your caseworker for a card with his or her name and telephone number high-lighted and keep it in a safe place.
  • If you are denied, call your caseworker immediately and request a hearing.

Getting the medical attention you need is necessary to prevent the further deterioration of your health, and to prove to Social Security that you are disabled. If you have questions regarding Medicaid and Disability, call Golson, McCracken for advice.
