Get Started TodayJune 11, 2015 | Golson & McCracken enjoyed returning to the Northern Wake County Senior Center’s Resource Fair. We were impressed with the variety of services that were represented, and the number of happy and healthy seniors who came by to say hello and ask questions about Social Security Disability. Everyone there enjoyed the refreshments and fellowship, and there were some really great door prizes. We were welcomed like “regulars” and were happy to see a lot of familiar faces at this dynamic Senior Center in Wake Forest, NC. |
June 1, 2015 | Many of our Sanford clients have told us that they receive treatment and medications at the Helping Hands Clinic in Sanford, and when we visited the clinic’s website we were delighted to see that they were our neighbors just a few blocks down on North Steele Street. Golson & McCracken toured the facility and we were very impressed with the quality as well as the quantity of services provided. Marilyn Green, a registered pharmacist and the executive director of the clinic, showed us around the facility, and introduced us to some of the volunteers who provide their skills and time so that Helping Hands can provide medical, diagnostic, dental, eye care, and pharmaceutical care free of charge to the most vulnerable members of the community. Local doctors, dentists, and optometrists, ophthalmologists, and an optician volunteer blocks of time to see patients at the clinic. There is a well-stocked pharmacy, a wide array of assistive devices, diabetic supplies, CPAP, and other medical equipment and supplies that have been donated to the facility. Ms. Green said that the clinic has been funded by the generous donations from community businesses and individuals.
If you are a Sanford resident and cannot afford medical services the Helping Hands Clinic is a wonderful resource. If you are a community member who wants to make a real difference in someone’s life, this is a good place to volunteer your time or make a cash donation. |
May 7, 2015 | Golson & McCracken attended the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast at First Baptist Church in Sanford, NC. First Baptist is only a block away so we were able to walk over to celebrate a day of prayer, and enjoy an amazing breakfast buffet, truly inspirational speakers, and some great music. Mayor Chet Mann talked about his high expectations and hopes for the future growth and revitalization of Sanford. Reverend James White taught a valuable lesson about why it’s never too late to pray or to have faith in a better future. It was a great way to spend a morning and we plan to sponsor a table again next year. |
April 17, 2015 | Golson & McCracken attended the Sanford Lions Club 2nd Annual Benefit Chicken Dinner. The entire crew headed over to the Lions Club Fairgrounds, and ate a delicious meal of BBQ chicken, baked beans, slaw, and rolls. The proceeds went to benefit the hearing and sight impaired and to the Boys and Girls Home. There was a raffle, but unfortunately, no one here is driving that shiny new truck! I guess we’ll just have to try again next year! |
October 19, 2014 | Golson & McCracken attended Checked & Aware, a Breast Cancer Awareness Event sponsored by A Ray of Hope. This was the first annual event held in Mebane, NC to educate and celebrate that awareness can bring early detection, better outcomes, and hopefully, someday soon a cure to breast cancer.
The event high-lighted breast cancer statistics affecting men and women. We were treated to an inspirational address from the woman who organized the event and is herself a breast cancer survivor, Angeline Hill. We learned that as long as we are moving forward that we are all runners, from Vegan Val, a marathon runner, who stressed the necessity of physical activity and a healthy diet in providing individuals with the best possible outcome for any disease process. This event was family friendly. Refreshments were served, and there were several very young people (ages 4 to 11) present who helped to set up and break down the decorative tables. A TV was raffled, and there were opportunities to purchase breast cancer awareness caps, jewelry, scarves, datebooks, and travel mugs. Everyone who attended was entertained while they learned. Golson & McCracken was there to make sure that the community knows that Social Security Disability is a benefit that is available to victims of breast cancer as well as other diseases or impairments that prevent an individual from working for 12 consecutive months or more. We hope to remain an active participant in this event for years to come! |
October 11, 2014 | Golson & McCracken were very happy to attend Generations Family Practice’s annual Family Day & Health Fair. The weather was beautiful, and we were able to see the SAS Championship Golf Tournament on Prestonwood Country Club’s Golf Course from the health fair!
Attendees could take advantage of free health screenings and demonstrations, flu and pneumonia vaccines, and prize drawings. The kids that attended had a great time with all of the games that were available, and the face paintings were nothing short of amazing! Food trucks provided everything from delicious Philly Cheesesteaks to Italian Ices with flavors like caramel apple and orange zinger with candied ginger! Nancy and Travis really enjoyed meeting the caring providers and staff at Generations, as well as the attendees of the Health Fair. We offered advice regarding eligibility for Social Security Disability benefits. This event could not have been any nicer. Everyone who attended had a smile on their face. The medical professionals at Generations obviously care about their patients and the community they serve. |
September 19, 2014 | Golson & McCracken attended the Bull City Veterans Stand Down at the National Guard Armory in Durham, NC. Veterans were honored by various local dignitaries including Congressman G.K. Butterfield, a Vietnam Vet himself. Pam Saulsby, who most will remember from the WRAL evening news, hosted the event, and sung a song in honor of Veterans and their families.Homeless Veterans were able to access hot showers, a delicious meal, haircuts, and dental care. Other services included opportunities to network with social services, counseling, educational, legal and job resources.
Golson & McCracken had the honor and opportunity to talk with many of the Veterans present who had questions regarding the differences and crossover between VA Disability benefits and Social Security Disability benefits. We always want to make sure that disabled Veterans know how important it is to file their Social Security claims as soon as they become unable to work to avoid the potential loss of their eligibility. We were inspired by so much of what we heard and saw at this event which is always so well organized and attended. |
September 6, 2014 | Golson & McCracken attended the Unity in the Community Festival, an annual event held at the NC State Fairgrounds held by The Light 103.9 radio station. The festival was held to promote unity within the community and to honor our military and first responders. The attendance was great and everyone seemed to be having a wonderful time.
Attendees were treated to live music held on the outdoor stage. Educational seminars indoors featured such varied presentations as the rousing speaker, NAACP NC President Reverend William Barber, who spoke about the future of the NAACP in NC, to a Zumba presentation that had everyone on their feet and rocking the house! Nancy and Travis gave a seminar on Social Security Disability benefits, and held a Q&A session with an engaged audience who had great questions, and their own anecdotes to share regarding their experiences with Social Security claims. This was a wonderful event. The Light 103.9 team and their listeners really know how to have a good time in a family friendly atmosphere that celebrates our military and first responders in a truly inspirational way. |
June 26, 2014 | Golson & McCracken attended the Northern Wake Senior Center’s Resource Fair on Thursday, June 26, 2014. This was a great opportunity to discuss how the unique Social Security Disability questions those come up with those who are rapidly approaching retirement age and for those aging parents of disabled adult children or grandparents who are caregivers for their disabled grandchildren.
We enjoyed seeing some of the seniors and staff that we had met here before. We met a lot of new people that included seniors and other service providers from the medical, pharmaceutical, and educational fields. The Senior Center put together a wonderful event! |
June 12, 2014 | Golson & McCracken attended the Bimbé Cultural Arts Festival on May 17, 2014. The Bimbe Festival has been a tradition in Durham, NC for over 40 years. This family oriented event is a celebration of African and African American history, culture, art and traditions.
Participants enjoyed live national and local talent, ethnic food, arts and crafts, an interactive kid’s area, and learning about community resources. Golson & McCracken spoke to many individuals regarding Social Security Disability, such as the qualifications for a claim, advice on community resources that could provide medical attention and other specific needs while they were pursuing their claims. |
May 02, 2014 | Golson & McCracken had the honor of attending the Wilmington VA Stand Down on May 2, 2014. This was a very well-organized event held at VFW Post 2573.
The Veterans were met with a hot breakfast and lunch, really spectacular live music, and the opportunity to enjoy fellowship with other Veterans. Many service providers were available to assist Veterans in housing, employment and educational opportunities, medical and mental health care, clothing and bedding, shoes, toiletries, and free haircuts. There were raffles throughout the day for gift cards and bus passes among other prizes. In my opinion all who attended were winners. We enjoyed answering questions from the Veterans about the overlap of VA Disability and Social Security Disability claims and benefits. We also met many caring professionals who go the extra mile to make sure that our Wounded Warriors and Fallen Heroes are able to access the services they need with the dignity and respect that they deserve. We look forward to attending this event again next year. |
Apr. 25, 2014 | Golson & McCracken attended the Foothills Homeless Veterans Stand Down in Hickory, NC on April 25, 2014.
There was a rousing open ceremony in which the Veterans marched in to the cheers and applause of all the visiting dignitaries, vendors, and volunteers. Everyone was on their feet. The colors were presented, and we all pledged our allegiance and enjoyed a heartfelt performance of the National Anthem. Breakfast and lunch were served, and not surprisingly since we were in Hickory, there was barbecue! The Veterans who attended had a lot of good questions about filing for Social Security Disability. Many of them had filed in the past and been denied the benefits that they had earned in their service to our country, working hard, and playing by the rules. We met some great people who help Veterans get back on their feet: a retired Army and Air Force Chaplain who meets with needy Veterans every Wednesday to offer spiritual as well as practical guidance, a Blue Star Mother who assists Veterans who have fallen on hard times with numerous services needed to get back on their feet, and a representative from a homeless shelter for female Veterans that offers long term transitional housing and practical help to help these heroes to rebuild their lives. Everyone who attended the Stand Down benefited in some way. As usual we walked away with the knowledge that while things are tough for many of these brave men and women, there are a lot of caring individuals and organizations that are there to help. |
Apr. 11, 2014 | Golson & McCracken attended the Project Homeless Connect/VA Stand Down in Winston Salem, NC on April 11, 2014.
We enjoyed meeting and giving information to many Veterans who had questions about the differences between VA Disability and Social Security Disability. Many Veterans who were already receiving VA benefits were unaware that they also qualified for additional benefits from Social Security. Some had actually been misinformed about the possibility, and needed to apply quickly to avoid waiting too long. The event itself was very well attended and organized. Snacks, beverages, and a delicious hot lunch were served. Veterans were able to access hot showers, haircuts, toiletries, and clothing. There were many organizations present including representatives from Veterans Affairs, colleges, work training and employment organizations, medical and mental health services, housing services, and substance abuse counseling. There is no doubt in my mind that everyone who attended benefited from the Stand Down. We look forward to attending for many years to come. |
Feb. 3, 2014 | Greene County Senior Center, Snow Hill, NC: Golson & McCracken enjoyed this opportunity to present information regarding the Social Security Disability Process at this very nice forum in Snow Hill, NC. The director, Sharon Harrison, was very helpful, and everyone there made us feel welcome. Some of the attendees met with us individually after the session, and had very good questions. Although, Snow Hill is a small town by population, the event was very well-attended, and had the small town hospitality that we love. The Senior Center is quite impressive in size and services offered. Seniors can come there to exercise, participate in arts and crafts and other activities, socialize, have their taxes done, or receive information on services that they may need. We really enjoyed visiting this vital community resource. |
Dec. 11, 2013 | Hope Mills Sunshine Senior Center: Golson & McCracken had the opportunity to present information regarding Social Security Disability benefits at this well-attended forum. The seniors here kept the session lively with questions about the benefits available, the process of applying for benefits, and the advantages of having representation throughout the process. This center offers opportunities for seniors to socialize, engage in arts and crafts, and exercise including yoga classes. The staff members we met were very pleasant and professional, and the senior participants couldn’t have been any nicer. The cakes and goodies that some of the seniors were bringing in looked and smelled incredible! |
Nov. 19. 2013 | Maplewood Senior Apartments: Golson & McCracken spoke to residents of this Senior Apartments located in Durham’s West End neighborhood. We discussed the range of Social Security benefits, some of which many people are not aware of including Disabled Widowers Benefits and Benefits for Disabled Adult Children. The residents there have a nice dayroom where they can chit chat, enjoy coffee and other refreshments, or access the internet with the computers provided. We met some very nice residents, staff, and a very impressive young intern who is pursuing her master’s degree in social work. |
Nov. 8, 2013 | Golson McCracken attended and helped to serve a Veterans Day Celebration lunch at the Next Level Outreach Campus in Durham, NC. The menu included ribs, chicken, fish, burgers, hot dogs, side items, and desserts. Captain Newborn gave us a tour of the facility. There are medical, educational, and recreation facilities available, as well as collections of military uniforms, posters, and books honoring our veterans’ service. Particularly interesting were the collections honoring local veterans. The Next Level Campus serves as a place for veterans to access medical and educational services, and counseling. It is a safe place for homeless and other veterans to relax with clean bathrooms, vending machines, computers, and a variety of recreation and work out equipment. The Veterans Day Celebration was very well attended, and a good meal and fellowship was enjoyed by all. |
Nov. 6, 2013 | Golson McCracken attended the Wayne County Veterans Stand Down in Goldsboro, NC. At this event we were privileged to meet Michael Dorman, a retired Coast Guard veteran and founder of Military Missions in Action, who was awarded the 2012 Presidential Citizens Medal by President Obama. He brought clothing, shoes, medical and personal care products for the veterans who attended.
Veterans had the opportunity to have breakfast and lunch, and talk to representatives from East Carolina University and Wayne Community College about educational opportunities especially designed for veterans. Some photos from the Stand Down can be found on the East Carolina University Website: http://www.ecu.edu/news/reentryvan13.cfm |
Oct. 18, 2013 | The Raleigh Veterans Stand Down. This was a great opportunity to participate in an event that honors those who have served and sacrificed, and are now in need. July 21, 2013 | The Radio Skywriter: We really enjoyed the opportunity to be interviewed on Pat Murray’s 30 minute community magazine talk show that airs on Sunday evenings at 6:30pm. It is broadcast on WNCU 90.7 FM, a Jazz and community affairs station licensed to North Carolina Central University. The Radio Skywriter show is designed to connect listeners in the Durham and surrounding are with community services. The focus on our conversation was on the different Social Security benefits that are available, how to apply and pursue these benefits, and the criteria that Social Security uses to determine eligibility. |
