Do I Qualify for Social Security Disability Benefits?

One of the most common questions people ask when inquiring about Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is whether or not their particular disability qualifies them to receive benefits. Unlike workers’ compensation insurance, which offers benefits for those individuals who have sustained a minor injury, temporary disability or partial disability while on the job, SSDI is a federally-run program that provides assistance to those Americans who have found themselves faced with severely debilitating or life-threatening medical conditions.

To qualify for SSDI benefits there are specific requirements which must be met. As SSDI is a federally funded Social Security program, you must have worked a certain number of years and earned an exact number of work credits at a job where you paid into the Social Security program. Work credits are accumulated based on your wages and a total of 4 credits can be earned per year. Most people will need 40 credits to file a claim and half of those credits must have been earned in the 10 years prior to the accident or illness that caused the disability.

The primary qualification in determining SSDI eligibility is whether or not you have a permanent disability. You are likely to qualify for SSDI if:

  • You are unable to continue performing the same work tasks now as before the accident
  • You are incapable of adjusting to another position or field due to your disability
  • Your disability is expected to last at least one year or result in your death

There are other factors the Social Security Administration will use to determine whether or not an individual is eligible to receive SSD benefits, so it is in your best interest to get help from an experienced Social Security Disability representative in North Carolina.
