Sadly, many of those who have made the biggest sacrifices for our country are now homeless.

Veteran Stand Downs are events that the Department of Veterans Affairs holds to provide services to homeless Veterans. Services offered can include food, clothing, health screenings, counseling on VA and Social Security benefits, and referrals to health care, housing, and employment services. Stand Downs may be coordinated between local VAs, other government agencies, and community agencies serving the homeless.

The original Stand Down for homeless Veterans was modeled after the Stand Down concept that provided a safe retreat for units returning from combat during the Vietnam War. These Stand Downs were held at secure base camps to allow soldiers to get a shower, clean uniforms, medical attention, and their mail. In this safe environment the battle weary soldier could renew their spirit and health.

VA Stand Downs are currently held at various cities across the country to honor and assist Veterans who are experiencing housing and other financial crises. They can connect with a wide range of services and fellowship with other Veterans. They can enjoy a hot meal, hear live bands, access multiple agencies, get a haircut, free clothing, toiletries, and sometimes hot showers are available.

We met some really great people, and enjoyed the lunch that was provided for all.
