What a Vocational Expert Does at a SSD Hearing

Any individual, whose claim for Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits has been denied is given a 60-day window in which to file a request for a hearing with an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ). This type of hearing could be compared to a courtroom trial, but it is conducted in a far less formal setting. There is no jury at a SSD hearing, it is simply the ALJ who reviews the evidence presented to make a determination as to whether your claim actually has merit.

In many cases, the Social Security Administration will ask that a vocational expert be brought in to testify as to what types of work you did in the past 15 years, and what types of work your physical limitations could allow you to perform since the onset of your disability. If the vocational expert believes that you can still do the work required by any of your jobs in the past 15 years, or that you should be able to perform well in another profession or at other duties, then there is the possibility that your benefit claim will be denied.

Our North Carolina Social Security Disability advocates have more than 20 years experience helping people just like you navigate the social security system. Our hard work and dedication has led to our clients recovering in excess of $25 million dollars in lifetime rewards and benefits. We are committed to aggressively advocating on behalf of our clients and doing everything we can to help maximize our clients’ claims.

In this type of situation, preparation and knowledge are key factors. We will not only help prepare you and any witnesses we feel may be beneficial to your case, but we will conduct a thorough review of the vocational aspects of your claim so that we can challenge any false or incorrect assumptions and statements presented by an SSD vocational expert. Contact Golson, McCracken Inc. right away to find out more about what we can do for you.
